FOURTH SET
3.40pm Tomic 5 Djokovic 4 This is the moment where Novak would normally look to change it up, rattle and frazzle and get a break. But Tomic is wise to that plan, and goes up 30-0 on his serve. The Serb battles back for 30-30, despite taking a tumble and applauding Tomic's winner, and then rips an off-forehand winner to make it deuce. But Bernie eeks out the hold.
3.44pm Tomic 5 Djokovic 5 Someone in our web bunker has just referred to Bernard as 'the Atomic kitten.' Tee hee. More lion than kitten though as the youngster gets to 0-30 on the Djokovic serve, two points from the set. Yet again, Djokovic claws his way back in to 30-30, and produces a big first serve when he has to for game point. Another of their more torturous interchanges results in a big winner from Tomic that lands plum on the line. Deuce. First serve in the net from Novak (his first serve percentage has dipped to 63% for the match), but he brings up a second game point, and holds with an ace. Class.
3.50pm Tomic 5 Djokovic 6 The mark of a great player is bending a situation to suit you. And so it is that Djokovic, as if by magic, manufactures break point on the Tomic serve. A lot more backhands to backhands and forehands to forehands, and multiply that by quite a lot, and then do so again, and you will get a small indication of what the tennis is like between these two. But hello Novak, he plays a lovely drop shot, throws his head back, and roars to the heavens. Djokovic breaks, and will serve for the match.
3.55pm Tomic 5 Djokovic 7 00-15, 15-15, then 30-15, and Djokovic is two points from victory. He looks pooped, I must say. But Bernie is still scampering, even though he does till look like he's knocking up when he plays a lot of his groundstrokes. His forehand goes long, he challenges, but Djokovic has two match points. Backhand volley from Djokovic, Tomic chases it down, but the net gets in the way. Game set and match to Novak Djokovic, but very big cheers for Bernard Tomic. We'll be seeing much more of him, I am sure.
3.56pm Novak Djokovic defeats Bernard Tomic 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to reach the men's semi-finals
And here's Djokovic...
"I'm delighted to be through to the semi-finals, it was a very good match. I had some very very difficult service games that I managed to hold. He's such an unpredictable player, young, first quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for him, he was hitting a lot of winners, he was not making a lot of unforced errors from the baseline, I tried to change the pace but he was better at that, so I'm just happy to get through. Whoever I play, it's a semi-final, it's a big one."
