Tennis star Rafael Nadal, Spain’s flag bearer for Friday’s opening ceremonies, is ready to play in the Olympics after being sidelined with a wrist injury for more than two months. The 14-time major champion hit for two hours with fellow Spaniard David Ferrer on Monday on a practice court at the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro. Nadal hasn’t played since pulling out of the French Open on May 27 before his third-round match because of an injured left wrist. He won a singles gold medal for Spain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but missed the 2012 London Games with a knee injury.
Switzerland's world number four Stan Wawrinka has withdrawn from the Olympic Games because of a back injury.
"The team and I decided that I am going to play," said Nadal. "It’s obvious that it’s not the ideal situation but at the same time my captain had the confidence today that the best option is to try to have some positive results for our country.
"The best thing is doing the six hours of practice that the wrist is not worse than yesterday - that’s great news.
“This whole experience is really different and it’s a great atmosphere being with all the other athletes here.”
While Kokkinakis, playing under a protected ranking in Brazil, admits his shoulder injury is still “getting there”, the world No. 452 says that he hopes to make the most of his first Olympic Games, both on court and off.
“Tennis is obviously a big part of things for me, but it’s not the only reason I’m here,” he said. “I’m soaking up the atmosphere.
“I’m going to try and absorb as much as I can, watch as much sport as I can across the Olympics and enjoy my time back on court.”
