Bartoli won't be chosen for Olympics

France’s Sports Minister David Douillet tells DirectMatin.fr that top Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli will not be chosen by the French Tennis Federation for the London Olympics. Apparently, the seventh-ranked Bartoli had the support of the the Sports Ministry, but the FFT has decided not to make an exception in its qualification criteria, which, like the ITF’s, states that a player cannot be eligible for the Olympics if she does not make herself available for Fed Cup twice during the two years that precede the Games.

Bartoli has only played two Fed Cup ties in career, both in 2004. She has refused to play other ties because she insists that her father, Walter, be allowed to coach her at the ties; the FFT does not allow private coaching during Fed Cup weekends. The United States and other countries have the same rule.

The decision will be a blow to Bartoli, as the Olympics will be played on grass at Wimbledon, where she reached the final in 2007.

Nestor ce u dublu igrati sa Pospisilom

Stephanie Myles and yours truly have heard that Daniel Nestor’s choice for the 2012 Olympic doubles event will be Vasek Pospisil.

Among the principal reasons for the choice of Pospisil is that Milos Raonic is in the singles event and that could potentially clash with the doubles once both events begin. Equally, Pospisil will be able to practice doubles full-time with Nestor in the lead up to the Olympics – and the two might play a couple of ATP events together, including Eastbourne before Wimbledon and Newport the week after.

Even if he had played doubles, Raonic’s main focus would probably still have been on the singles.

A further bonus is that Pospisil will get a chance to participate in the Olympic Games.

He and Nestor won a crucial Davis Cup doubles match in Israel last September when they defeated the experienced pair of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram. That was the second time they have played together after also winning a Davis Cup match against Ecuador last July.

Raonic and Nestor have played together twice (in Davis Cup), winning in Colombia in 2010 and losing last February in Vancouver against France.

Najbolji srpski dubl igrač Nenad Zimonjić je zvanično na "Tviteru" saopštio da će na Olimpijskim igrama igrati sa Anom Ivanović i Jankom Tipsarevićem.

"Na OI igram sa Jankom dubl & sa Anom mix!! Napred Srbija!!!", poručio je Zimonjić.

"Mislim da serviram i riterniram bolje nego ikada. Sa igračem kao što je Zimonjić na mreži očekujem da osvojim neku od medalja. Bićemo nosioci jer se gleda i singl i dubl rang lista", rekao je Tipsarević.

On je kazao da će se na Olimpijskim igrama mnogi najjači svetski timovi razdvojiti jer parovi nisu iz iste države.

"S obzirom da se razdvajaju svetski timovi jer nisu iz iste zemlje, osim braće Brajan, Zimonjić i ja imamo šanse za medalju", kazao je Tipsarević posle eliminacije sa Rolan Garosa.

Olimpijske igre u Londonu održaće se od 27. jula do 12. avgusta ove godine.

It’s a good time to be Maria Sharapova. The newly crowned #1 tennis player in the world just completed a career Grand Slam at the French Open. Now, only days later, she’s been named as the Russian flag bearer for the London Olympics. A truly prestigious honor for any athlete, let alone from a country that produces so many high-level Olympians. Although Sharapova resides in Bradenton, Florida, she remains loyal to her home country regularly competing at Federation Cups. After her recent French Open victory, she received a congratulatory phone call from both President Vladimir Putin Prime and Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
To make this even more remarkable, Sharapova is the first Russian woman to carry the flag at the Opening Ceremony. So yea, she’s kind of a big deal.

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has backtracked and named Mahesh Bhupathi and his regular partner Rohan Bopanna a team at the London Olympics. Top doubles player Leander Paes has been paired with Vishnu Vardhan, but it appears the controversy is not over.

BBC World is quoting Paes' father Vece as saying that Leander will refuse to partner with Vardhan, even though AITA extended a an olive branch by naming Leander as India's male mixed doubles player to pair with Sania Mirza, who won the Roland Garros mixed title with Bhupathi. However, Mirza still needs a wild card to get into the Olympics, and said in Paris that she would rather pair with Bhupathi. She has yet to speak about the AITA's decision.

Bhupathi and Bopanna had both refused to play with Paes, who ended his pairing with Bhupathi last year in a decision that angered his partner, who he had won three Grand Slam doubles titles with in the late 1990s.

"The AITA agrees that this decision is unfair to Paes...but in the given circumstances, which is not 100 percent tennis circumstance, this is the best option," president Anil Khanna Khanna told reporters. "Leander is undoubtedly the most patriotic player...AITA holds him in very high esteem and appeals to him to accept this decision."

Vece Paes countered: "Things have changed drastically over the past two days. Leander has always compromised while playing for the country. I think now he is tired of doing that. Two people are blackmailing the country and this decision sets a bad precedent for others."

Bhupathi and Bopanna released a statement that they were delighted with the decision. "The events of the last few days have been extremely challenging. In making each of our decisions, we were guided by our strong convictions regarding what we believed was fair and we are pleased that this is reflected in the outcome. We are excited that we will be playing together at the Olympics."

Paes otkacio Bupatija prosle godine a sada bi da igra sa njim iako on to nece . Indijci su dobro preinacili svoju odluku, verovatno pod necijim pritiskom.

Roger Federer criticizes the eligibility rules that might keep German tennis players out of the Olympic Games. The German Olympic Sports Federation says players must be ranked at least No. 24 in the world to participate. If the German Tennis Federation isn’t able to convince the Olympic Sports Federation that the rule is too restrictive, that would leave No. 28 Florian Mayer, No. 29 Philipp Kohlschreiber, No. 49 Tommy Haas, and No. 24 Julia Goerges out of London.

"It is a joke how high the criteria has been set," Federer told the German press. "I'd like to see as many German players as possible at Wimbledon. Kohlschreiber has beaten Rafael Nadal, Tommy has beaten me, and we are two of the favorites for both Wimbledon and the Olympics. You have to open the eyes, look beyond the boundaries and see the bigger picture."

Meanwhile, the Swedish Olympic Committee has changed its criteria, and will now allow world No. 46 Sofia Arvidsson to play in the Olympics in singles, and in mixed with Robert Lindstedt.

Mislim da još neki savezi imaju tako idiotska pravila, nisu samo Nemci. Plus što Bartoli neće biti na OI, a baš je počela da igra bolje, ali ko joj je kriv.

Dobro Bartoli je sama kriva jer je htela da igra za FED kup pod svojim uslovima ali evo i Svedjani za malo da ne posalju Sofiju koja je igrala za Fed kup, osvajala i ono srce, ima i renking....dobro da su se predomislili. Nisu to ni siromasne zemlje pa da zbog toga ne mogu da salju puno sportista. Po njihovim kriterijumima na OI nije bitno ucestvovati

The USTA has named Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Christina McHale, and Varvara Lepchenko as its women's singles players for the 2012 London Olympics. The American doubles teams will be Liezel Huber/Lisa Raymond and the Williams sisters.

On the men's side, the USTA named John Isner, Andy Roddick, Donald Young, and Ryan Harrison in singles, with doubles teams of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, and Isner/Roddick. Both Serena and Lepchenko were granted special exemptions from the Olympic Committee, as Williams had not fulfilled her Fed Cup requirements and Lepchenko—a native of Uzbekistan who has lived in the U.S. for the past 10 years—just became an American citizen last fall.
