GENEVA, SWITZERLAND: In a match that will go down in Davis Cup history Tomas Berdych and Lukas Rosol put defendng champions Czech Republic into a narrow lead heading into tomorrow's reverse singles in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round tie.

The doubles encounter against Stanislas Wawrinka and Marco Chiudinelli lasted two minutes over seven hours making it the longest match in Davis Cup history and the second longest match ever with the final scoreline reading 64 57 64 67(3) 2422.

Playing at an extremely high standard throughout the match both pairs felt the importance of the victory in the overall context of the tie with Berdych and Wawrinka having won a point each on the opening day and preparing to face each other in the opening rubber on Sunday as well.

A vociforous crowd got right behind the home pairing and helped them to save 12 match points in the final set before they finally succombed as the strong serving of Berdych and Rosol enabled the Czech pair to stay ahead throughout the decider. It was a double fault that acted as the nail in the coffin as the strains of such a physical match ultimately took hold.

Wawrinka must now find a way to bounce back from what must be a devastating defeat to challenge the world No.6 first thing tomorrow when the recovery powers of both men will be tested to the extreme.
