Intervju Borna Coric

Simon Cambers

Tuesday, 19 August 2014

At 17, Borna Coric has long been earmarked as a potential star. After winning his first junior grand slam title at the US Open in 2013, the Croatian has been making big strides in the seniors and he returns to New York this week to try to qualify for the main draw. Already inside the world’s top 200, the confident yet down-to-earth Coric, who divides his time between London and Zagreb, told The Tennis Space how Goran Ivanisevic and Rafa Nadal have helped him and how making the main draw at the US Open is “realistic”.

You must be excited to be back in New York after what you achieved last year?
For sure. New York is one of the best cities in the world and I really enjoy playing there. The tournament is unbelievable, I like the surface and I won there last year in juniors so it’s going to be very interesting playing the qualifying.

How much does winning the juniors help your confidence?
(A lot) of course, but I also had a couple of good wins on the ATP Tour as well as my US Open title. If I can play the way I played in the ATP events then I think I can do well.

You reached the quarter-finals in Umag and beat Jerzy Janowicz in Davis Cup. Sounds like you like the big stage?
It’s much easier when you’re playing against these (top) guys. You don’t have any pressure in those matches. When I came to the court I knew I had to believe that I can win. I know if I play my best tennis I can do well. And I did that. I think if I continue to play like I have done on the Challenger Level and even at Futures level I am going to have a pretty decent career, but I know I’m going to have to work for it and there’s a long way to go.

What would you say is your best surface?
Well, I have had good results on clay this year. Normally I would have said that hard courts are my best surface but I think in two, three years, clay courts might be my best. I grew up on clay courts but my style of play suits hard courts, I think.

Every Croatian player seems to have a fantastic serve. How good is yours?
I know (laughing). I have a good serve but some days I can serve unbelievably, like against (Fabio) Fognini (whom he pushed to three sets in Umag), say, and then the next day I can make only 25 percent first serves. So I have to keep working to be more consistent.

You train with Donna Vekic in London. Has seeing what she’s done inspired you?
Well, it’s quite different because on the women’s Tour, I think it’s easier (to make it) when you’re younger. It’s just the way it is. But for sure, (seeing Vekic do well) it’s good to see that you can do big things.

How much help has Goran Ivanisevic given you?
He is unbelievable. He’s helping me all the time. When I am in Zagreb, he hits with me and gives me lots of good advice. It’s amazing because when I was 6 or 7 I was watching him on TV and now here we are hitting together.

And you trained with Rafa last year, is that right?
I had a week with him at the end of last year and I think it helped a lot. I can only say thank you very much to him for having me. I learned a lot from him – of course he’s a much better player than me, but also because of the way he trained every day. It was an unbelievable experience for me.

So how about US Open qualifying? Can you do it?
I think that is quite a realistic hope, to get in the main draw. For me that would be amazing but that’s a long way away so I think I need to go round by round.

What are your goals for the rest of this year?
I have about 100 points to defend in the rest of the year so I think if I stay in the top 200 that would be quite good. Of course if I do well at the US Open then I might say something like 160, 170 can be possible but that is a lot to do.

Finally, what’s the big difference in playing senior level compared to juniors?
I think there is not a big change. Of course the level is a lot better, but we all know how to play. But on the ATP Tour, players are not going to give up, they’re going to fight for every point. Sometimes juniors can give up, but even if it was 6-2, 2-0, ATP guys don’t give in. That and the serve, they are the two biggest things.

Neka bude ovde
I had to share one of my proudest pieces for the website, this feature on Aleksandra Krunic. It was great speaking with her one-on-one after she upset Petra Kvitova, and I was so impressed with how she handled the media in her big moment.http://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/articles/2014-09-01/krunic_steps_into_slam_spotlight_in_new_york.html?chip=1
