Ana Ivanovic

On being in Sofia...
"It's a good feeling. It's near home, so it almost feels like a home tournament. We drove by car, it only took four hours. It was easy, and I did it with my parents, so we had a lot of time to catch up."

On her draw...
"Well, there are no easy opponents here. Everyone can be dangerous. But it's a good challenge. I also think the round robin format is different and more fun for us, and more fun for the spectators."

On her highlight this year...
"For me I really feel like I played well at the US Open. I have a lot of fond memories from there."

On her goals for 2014...
"My main goal is to reach the WTA Championships at the end of the year."

Two-time champion Ana Ivanovic made a flying start to the Garanti Koza WTA Tournament of Champions, defeating Tsvetana Pironkova in straight sets on Tuesday.

Striking the ball with a calm confidence, Ivanovic was in control from first point to last, running out a 60 62 winner against her fellow wildcard.

Ivanovic, who warmed up for her season finale with a runs to the final in Linz and quarterfinals in Moscow, set the tone at the start of the match with a love hold before breaking the Bulgarian with a precise backhand winner one game later.

Despite the best efforts of her compatriots inside the Armeec Arena, Pironkova could find no answer to the early onslaught and after just 22 minutes Ivanovic wrapped up the opening set with yet another forehand winner.

Pironkova belatedly got on the scoreboard at the start of the second, and the roar of approval from the crowd seemed to temporarily inspire her as she carved out her first break points in the next game.

However, this only succeeded in raising Ivanovic to greater heights. Displaying her full repertoire of shots she fended off the danger before promptly breaking to love. It was one-way traffic from then on as the Serb raced towards the finish line, wrapping up victory when Pironkova dumped a forehand into the net.

"It's always tough playing a local girl," Ivanovic, who won the Tournament of Champions at its previous home in Bali in both 2010 and 2011, said after the match. "Obviously to open the tournament and play the first match is never easy, but I really enjoyed it.

"I really tried to focus on what I had to do and I did serve well - I was placing the ball really well around the court - and I was really happy with that. It's tough to play on a new court so I'm really happy to win the match."

Pironkova reached the semifinals at last year's tournament and now faces an uphill battle to qualify from her group, which also includes Elena Vesnina and the in-form Samantha Stosur.

"It definitely wasn't good for me - I didn't play my best tennis - and Ana was playing very well, with lots of strong, deep shots that made it hard for me to get into the points," Pironkova said.

"I was also a bit nervous as it was my first match in front of the home crowd. I'm a bit disappointed but I hope the next match will be better for me."

Ana is set to play four-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova in Bogota, Colombia on 6 December. It will be the 25-year-old’s first visit to the country.

As she looks forward to the event, Ana gave an interview to Colombian newspaper El Heraldo:

Spoiler: pokaži
In the last few years we have seen a very volatile WTA circuit. How much impact do injuries have on the dynamic of the rankings?
Unfortunately injuries are a part of being a professional athlete and I have had my fair share, like any other player. But I can’t blame injuries for my performances. In some ways last year was a good year – my highest year-end ranking for some years, and I reached a Grand Slam quarter-final for the first time in so long. But I still haven’t reached my goal of getting back to the top 10, so there is a lot of work to be done.

Do you feel afraid of not being able to win another Grand Slam?
No, I am not afraid. Actually I am relishing the challenge. I feel that I still have the game to do it, and my match against Azarenka at the US Open showed that I am not too far away from being able to compete against the very top players. It was a nice feeling, being in an intense Grand Slam match against a top player, and I want to experience it a lot more.

Is the pressure greater because you have already won one Grand Slam?
In some ways it is, because you have proved to yourself, and to everyone else, that you are capable of achieving it, so the expectation increases. No matter how much belief you have in yourself, it is only when you achieve your goals, like winning a Grand Slam, that you prove to yourself how good you are. Pressure from the media increases because once you win a Grand Slam you become a contender at future tournaments.

Do you dream of being ranked in the top 10 again?
Yes, that’s my main goal at the moment. I am still quite far from achieving it: I need to be able to beat the top players. I played a great match against Na Li in Toronto but I missed a big chance to beat her. These are the kind of matches I have to start winning, in order to get back in the top 10. And it’s not getting any easier: there are many good young players around, like Sloane Stephens and Simona Halep. But I have confidence in my ability and I believe I can achieve this goal.

You wish to win the Australian Open, a hard court tournament. However, you have already won Roland Garros. Do you believe that it is more likely that you’ll win again on clay courts than hard?
Clay is probably my best surface but I enjoy playing on hard courts too. It’s hard to say for sure, but I’d probably agree that I am more likely to do well on clay than hard courts, and I love the French Open.
