Iz ugla Nadalovog fana o knjizi
The book starts with THE match. You know, the one: the 2008 Wimbledon final. Rafa’s recounting of the match is interwoven with flashbacks to childhood. The match dominates the book – it (and the interwoven flashbacks) encompasses approximately 2/3rds of the work. After that, he quickly moves through the Olympics, on to the 2010 slam tournaments, and ends with the US Open victory. Given the amount of time spent on that 2008 match, I kept wondering…how does one ever live down accomplishing such an amazing feat at a young age? To be forever defined in the public’s eye by a moment one experienced when merely 22 years old. He did it by moving on and trying to climb the next mountain, but will any ever seem as steep, challenging, and rewarding again?

From the selection:

My attitude was bad. I was depressed, lacking in enthusiasm. On the surface I remained a tennis-playing automaton, but the man inside had lost all love of life.

My team members were at a loss as to how to react to the gloom that descended on me. I became a different person, distant and cold; short and sharp in conversation. They worried about me, and they worried about the impact of my parents’ separation on my game.

They knew I couldn’t keep winning; they knew something had to give. And it did. First it was my knees that went.

[...]

Terribly sad, I pulled out of Wimbledon. My knees were the immediate reason, but I knew that the root cause was my state of mind. My competitive zeal had waned, the adrenalin had dried up.

My physical trainer, Joan Forcades, says there is a “holistic” cause-and-effect connection between emotional distress and physical collapse. He says that if your head is in permanent stress, you sleep little and your mind is distracted – exactly the symptoms.

I was showing at that time – the impact on your body is devastating. Messages are relayed to the muscles that, under the pressure of competition, lead to injuries. I am sure Joan is right.

World number two Nadal was forced to play his second round match with two bandaged fingers on his right hand after burning them on a hot plate at a restaurant in Ohio.

"I got burned. I had a little bit of accident in a restaurant a few days ago," Nadal told reporters after beating Frenchman Julien Benneteau 6-4 7-5.
"It was an accident. The plate was very, very hot and I got burned," added the Spaniard, who said the blistering was causing some discomfort during play.

"A little bit. If you see the blister, you can imagine. I am going to show you now," he said with a grin.

A veces ganas y otras pierdes.

Nadal: "Moram bolje za US open"

“Nisam mnogo promenio svoj način igre za US open prošle sezone.

US open počinje 29. avgusta.
