Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska says the reason she gave such a dismissive press conference during a Fed Cup tie against Israel in Eilat last month was because officials did nothing to control unruly fans. Apparently, insults were hurled at the Polish team, which also included Agnieszka’s younger sister Urzsula.
“There were a lot of things that were going on that shouldn’t have at that level and a lot of unfair behavior,” she told a small group of reporters at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. “The officials and chair umpire had no control at all. I didn’t expect this level at an ITF event. It was very disappointing. We had three tight matches and it was 1-1 and playing deciding doubles and there were a lot of nerves and pressure. We don’t expect [fans] to cheer for us, but you expect them to be fair. I didn’t expect that kind of atmosphere.”
Radwanska added that she, Fed Cup captain Tomasz Wiktorowski, and the rest of the team wrote a letter of protest to the ITF. She said it was definitely the worst atmosphere she had played in during her career.
“There was no security and we didn’t feel safe and there was no control, screaming all the time. It was awful,” the world No. 4 said.
