Rafael Nadal's doctor warns the Spaniard against playing too much

Rafael Nadal should be selective in the tournaments he plays on his return from tendonitis, according to the doctor who has treated him throughout his career.
Nadal lost Sunday's Chile Open final in his first event in eight months.
"What you have to do in this case is select tournaments properly, enter the circuit progressively," Dr Angel Luiz Cotorro told BBC Sport.
"On clay, movements are less aggressive because of the possibility to skid, which helps the tendon to suffer less."
Cotorro, who is also the doctor to Spain's Davis Cup team, added: "A quick surface is more aggressive than any other because of the abrupt changes in movement, the sudden brakes."
Nadal, who delayed his scheduled comeback until after the Australian Open because of a virus, has called for a reduction in the number of hard-court tournaments because of the injury risk they pose to players.
"Can you imagine football players playing on cement?" Nadal said after losing in three sets to world number 73 Horacio Zeballos in Vina del Mar.
It has also been suggested that the 11-time Grand Slam champion's use of orthopaedic shoes to overcome a congenital bone deformation might have contributed to his injury problems.
However, Cotorro believes Nadal's injury is the accumulation of wear and tear from nearly a decade at the top of the game.

"It's true the problems derived from Rafa's foot injury made us make some changes to the insole, but more than nine years of high-level competition have caused this tendon to have this type of injury," added Cotorro.
"The important aspect here is to provide progressive loads on the tendon in order to allow the tendon regenerate its fibres and readapt to training and then competition."
Nadal's low-key return to action continues at the Brazil Open this week, a tournament he has not played since he won it as a teenager in 2005.
His countryman Nicolas Almagro will defend his title in Sao Paulo with Juan Monaco and Stanislas Wawrinka also in the draw.

What has Nadal been doing for the last eight months?
"There are many ways to work assuming that the tendon does not suffer and maintaining physical condition. We have mainly worked with Alter G (weight-bearing treadmills) and stationary bicycle, elliptical bicycle." Dr Angel Ruiz-Cotorro

Sao Paulo: Rafael Nadal - David Nalbandian 6-2, 6-3
51. titula

Nadal struggled to find a rhythm in the beginning but was still able to break Nalbandian's serve twice to take the first set. He then rallied from 3-0 down in the second to win six straight games and close out the match in 1 hour, 18 minutes at the Ibirapuera arena.

Nadal, who was coming off two three-set matches, still looked far from his best and didn't seem to be moving well. The knee appeared to be bothering him again and he left many balls unchallenged throughout the match.

But with support from the crowd, which included former Brazil star striker Ronaldo and mixed martial arts champion Anderson Silva, Nadal took control of the match in the second set to secure the victory.

The 26-year-old Nadal, No. 5 in the world, is recovering from a torn and inflamed tendon in his knee. He returned to action at the VTR Open in Chile last week, losing the singles and doubles finals.

The final in Brazil was only his eighth singles match since returning. He withdrew from doubles in Sao Paulo after winning the first match with Nalbandian as his partner.

Nadal said he wanted to rest his knee for the singles tournament.

The 11-time Grand Slam champion admitted the level of competition in Brazil was not as high as in other tournaments but said it wasn't bad, either, giving him the perfect opportunity to test his knee. The Spaniard will play another clay-court tournament in Mexico in two weeks.

Izjava posle polufinalnog meca kada je malo teze, u 3 seta, savladao 111. Martina Alunda(LL)
"I’m missing all the things that make me competitive and give me physical confidence, something I’ve had for my whole career and that right now, given the circumstances, I don’t have,” he told reporters.

“I’m playing with what I’ve got and I hope to get stronger every day... I’m lacking speed in my reactions. I’m lacking energy when I need it. I’m lacking power in my legs to be able to hit the ball deep."

“Let’s see how my knee responds in Acapulco, we will discuss when we finish all this clay court [swing] what has happened during these three tournaments and what I thought about it. Then we will see if we are ready to play in Indian Wells or not. It is not a matter of better rivals or surface, is a matter of how my knee is progressing. I have no problem playing against better [quality] opponents better because I accept losing or winning. I understand that it’s been a long time since I competed at the highest level. I have had only had two weeks getting rhythm, but I need time to continue to improve and become competitive.”

Uradio bih to.
