Petkovic dances into semifinals

MASON, Ohio -- Nearly a year after its inception, Andrea Petkovic's victory dance is getting a lot of use these days.

Petkovic, the world No. 11, beat world No. 27 Nadia Petrova 7-5, 6-1 on the grandstand court Friday afternoon, punctuating the victory with her signature victory dance after storming her way into the semifinals.

"It feels awesomely great (to get to the semifinals)," Petkovic said.
"(It) doesn't matter if it's Premier level or international Grand Slam, I'm still satisfied with the way I played, so that's more important."

Petkovic, 23, has steamed her way through the summer circuit, winning 45 matches this year, the second most on the WTA behind No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki.

The German kept her form Friday, using six aces and 21 total winners to beat Petrova in just 90 minutes.

The win advances Petkovic to the semifinals against No. 14 Jalena Jankovic. Petkovic and Jankovic have already played twice this year, with Petkovic winning both.

"It was two times very good matches on a high level, but also very tough matches because there were long rallies," said Petkovic, the 2008 W&S champion.

Petko's parents didn't want her to play. They called the WTA, the doctor, the physios, and Petar all day trying to stop her.
"So this was the biggest fight, my parents calling my coach ten hundred times and trying to shut down the whole tournament."

Petković: "Stvar je u mentalitetu"

Anrdrea Petković poražena je u polufinalu turnira u Sinsinatiju od Jelene Janković, ali ističe da je naša teniserka igrala odlično.

Image

"Zadovoljna sam svojom igrom.

THE JOY OF DEFEAT

Andrea Petkovic has missed to reach the final of the WTA tournament in Cincinnati. Petko lost 6-7 (4), 1-6 to Jelena Jankovic (SRB | WTA 14) in the semifinals.
Andrea spent much of the time before the match wondering about her career because of a torn meniscus suffered in the quarterfinals against Nadia Petrova. She didn't know whether her previously repaired anterior cruciate ligament had been torn again. When an MRI revealed the injury was not too serious, there was no doubt she would go on court. “I’d rather die than retire,” Andrea said. “The audience comes and wants to see two semifinals. They pay a lot of money. I’m not the type of person to just withdraw and leave the audience out there. You know, when I go to concerts and the band comes two hours late and plays for 45 minutes and then they leave, then I’m really, really mad".
Despite her torn meniscus Petko is looking forward to playing the US Open: “I'll be ready for the US Open. If I can play the day after the injury, I can play seven days later as well."

AN INTERVIEW WITH ANDREA PETKOVIC
At the pre-US Open Wilson event, where we broke the Guinness World Record for the most people bouncing a tennis ball on a tennis racquet in one location, I caught up with German tennis player Andrea Petkovic and we chatted about her favorite things to do in NY, the possiblity of doing "The Dougie" as her new Petko Dance, and why she wants to be Jessica Alba. It's always a blast to chat with her. Check it out!

How did you get involved in this? (The Wilson event)

Well Wilson asked me a month ago and I was immediately on fire because I thought that it’s just a fun way (pause) first of all, I want to be in the Guinness Book of World Records (laughter) and second you know I always thought it was great to engage kids into sports, and nowadays with all the PlayStations, computers, Gameboys, whatever, it’s been tougher, so just you know having a fun way to engage the kids into sports is great.

What is your favorite thing to do here in NY?

Well, my favorite thing, I just like to stroll around NY and just find the little art galleries and restaurants, and cafes. NY has the great culture and great, great energy so I always enjoy just starting walking and landing somewhere. In no-man’s-land.

What is your favorite memory at the US Open?

My favorite memory - probably (pause) the Petko Dance was born here so I think that is my favorite memory. It was born here on Louis Armstrong Stadium so it’s been a year now, my anniversary of my Petko Dance and we’ll see.

And it’s changed a little bit now.

It’s changed, yeah. Actually I retired it first, and then I started losing. I lost 3 tournaments in a row so I brought back the moonwalk for clay, and I started winning again. Then I stopped for Wimbledon, but then I lost again in the 3rd round so now I have some kind of a wave. I don’t know, but it’s very inspirational, I guess, and it only comes when I win, then it comes out inside of me.

At one point you were thinking about doing “The Dougie?”

I wanted to do it but it's really hard! I think I have to practice. I wanted to do it in Indian Wells and Miami, but it was too tough. I have to get some good guys to teach me “The Dougie” and then I’m going to bring out “The Dougie.” But I saw Monfils do it. Gael. He did it in Montreal I think, it was great. But he knows how to dance so I have to learn it first.

What is your biggest passion outside of tennis?

My biggest passion is probably art in any kind of way. I like to read, to listen to music, to go to art galleries and just you know watch movies and get my head outside of tennis, and I think art is the best way to forget everything around you. It’s sort of like tennis because in tennis you are in a zone and you forget everything around you. Art gives me that in a different kind of way.

What is your favorite movie?

My favorite movie right now, it’s called Heartbreakers in English and Les Amours Imaginaires in French. It’s a Canadian-Quebec movie by Xavier Dolan, he’s only 21 years old and he’s already made two movies and the last one is great. I was blown away, and it took me a long time to find it because in Germany it is only in little cinemas. I had to travel an hour to find it and it was great, it was worth it.

What was the last thing that you read?

The last thing I read, I’m reading right now Thoughts of an Emperor by Marcus Aurelius. He was a Roman Emperor like 5000 years ago and he was a philosopher and I am reading this, and I am reading Don Quixote by Cervantes. It is a Spanish book but I am reading it in German. No Spanish for me.

If there was a fire and you could only save one thing, not a person, what would you save?

Only one thing? I would save probably my iPad because I have ten thousands of books there.

And if you could have one superhero ability what would it be?

I would be Jessica Alba and seduce all men.

...riječi su isto kao i gomile ljudi, nije nužno znati za sve, odaberi za sebe samo one prave...

An Interview With: Andrea Petkovic
Tuesday, August 30, 2011

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. When are you gonna run for prime minister?

ANDREA PETKOVIC: That takes a while, like another 10 years.

Q. What are your feelings about New York?

ANDREA PETKOVIC: I love New York and the I love the energy and the life going on in the city. I'd really like to take a stroll through the city and just feel the life and the energy. I really enjoy myself here.

Q. How would you describe the energy?

ANDREA PETKOVIC: It's just something like something vibrant. I love the culture. There is something artistic in the air, free spirits, a lot of creative minds out there. Yeah, it's very vibrant and creative.

Q. Most players just stay by the hotel, but do you go down to the Village or explore?

ANDREA PETKOVIC: Well, I just like to take a stroll through the city, but just away from the tourist attractions and by inspiration go and see and discover what happens. But of course not for five hours because I have to play matches, obviously. But, yeah, that's what I try to do sometimes when I get some time.

Q. What will a successful Open be for you today? This year?

ANDREA PETKOVIC: Well, you know, I have been struggling a little bit with my physical state right now, so it's already a big success for me being in the second round. I didn't expect to play at all, so for me, being able to play is a big success. So I don't really focus on results this much at that point of my state that I am in.

During doubles: I run to a dropshot, miss it and guy from the stands screams: Don't run, you gonna get injured! Haha, do I look that clumsy?
