I will not walk your dusty path and flat,
denoting this and that by this and that,
your world immutable wherein no part
the little maker has with Maker's art.
I bow not yet before the Iron Crown,
nor cast my own small golden sceptre down.

Intervju sa Jankom.

After winning his opening tournament of the year in Chennai, things turned sour for Janko Tipsarevic when he got injured at the Australian Open and had to pull out in the fourth round. Since then, he has struggled and his defeat by Ernests Gulbis in round in Indian Wells means he has now lost four matches in a row. But the Serb says he is ready to hit form again and also took the time to discuss a couple of the contentious issues facing the sport right now.

How are you feeling? I am missing a little of confidence, I am not going to lie. I lost in the first round four times in a row, which hasn’t happened to me in a long, long time. I got injured at the Australian Open and though I was pain-free by the time I got to Montpellier, I made a mistake because I wasn’t really ready. I didn’t practise enough, I didn’t do enough fitness, I just wasn’t ready. I had tricky draws, playing (Michael) Llodra first round and (Nikolay) Davydenko first round. You lose these matches and then you start to lose confidence and then here I had –well there is excuse in losing 6-2, 6-0 – but I am guessing that I had the toughest draw I could get (playing Gulbis). But I am really happy I am finally pain-free, my fitness coach is with me, finally, so I am going to use this time to obviously play some doubles and practice really hard for Miami. And I love Miami.

Tennis is adopting the athlete biological passport. What do you think of that and are you happy with drug testing at the moment? I have no problem getting tested as often as they want me to. But I think it’s not smart to suggest that somebody is taking substances, if you play let’s say in a tournament at 1,000 metres altitude and then you play the next week in a different one, and I don’t know, you had a cold or are sick or whatever (and then your blood profile changes significantly). Maybe it’s not bad because they can see that something is changing in your body but there should be a norm which you can’t go over. For example, if it was caffeine and the level is 2 and the normal level is 5 – I’m just saying these number because I have no idea (what they would be) – if the next time I am tested I am 4, I shouldn’t be accused of being doped.

Players are now being warned more often for time violations, when they take more than 25 seconds between points. What do you think of this? I generally don’t like it. I am in favour of umpires having more liberty to give warnings to players if they really take too long. But a lot of times it doesn’t only depend on the player. You have the situation where you play crazy-long rallies – Djokovic-Nadal probably know what I am talking about and I think even one of them, Rafa, said it, that they would not be able to produce that amount of quality tennis if the umpire was looking at his watch every time they played a 40-shot rally.

On the other hand, maybe in Masters Series and grand slams you have highly-trained ball-kids but in a lot of ATP events, you have ball kids who are not trained. So I ended up, let’s say in Chennai, getting a few warnings without even asking for the towel, just because the ball kid is looking around, not having balls or because the guys from the other side didn’t pass the balls or whatever. I don’t really want to fake it by saying ‘ah there’s a flashlight’ or ‘a baby’s crying’. I generally don’t like it.

On the Challenger Tour they are trialling the no-let serve. Do you like that idea?
To be honest with you I would have to try it and see how I felt. Wasn’t it in volleyball where they changed it from before, when if you hit the net it was a mistake? It didn’t have a great impact on the game. The 25-second rule, some players like it, some don’t, but it has the effect of speeding up the game so the fans are more interested and not sitting there for six hours. But I don’t understand the thinking behind continuing after the serve hits the top of the net. I don’t understand what will become better after this.

Ask Janko

Spoiler: pokaži
We asked you to send in your questions for world No 9 Janko Tipsarevic and The Tennis Space sat down with him in Indian Wells to answer them. Here is the second of two parts.

Hello from Bulgaria! Which of the young players do you think has the brightest future and what do you think about Grigor Dimitrov? Did you think The Balkans need their big event in the ATP tour, so we can develop tennis here much more… and what do you think about the talent we’ve got here?
Grigor Dimitrov is a player who in my opinion hasn’t yet reached the full extent of his potential. I think there is more to him than he’s currently showing, even though he’s ranked 30 in the world at the age of 22. He’s still very, very young. The borderline age in tennis has moved. The average age in the top 100 is 27-something so it’s different than a few years before and way tougher for us to see like a 20-year-old grand slam winner or something. I don’t know if you count Milos Raonic as young, if you do, I would say he and Bernard Tomic have the brightest futures.

I’m Kavin from India. I’m presently 18 years old and I’ve been playing tennis for one year. My coach told me that I’ve improved very fast in such a short period. I want to know whether I can become a professional in tennis considering my age, or if I should not be trying to break a rock with my bare head. Should I quit college and go full-time or carry on my degree and play as much as I can?
If you started playing tennis one year ago, I would say you should try to use the most from this sport and get the education, if that’s possible. Most of the guys on tour right now started playing tennis when they were five or so. It’s a little bit too late to become a professional tennis player but it’s never too late to stay involved in the sport, get your degree in college and who knows, one day maybe be a professional tennis coach.

Novak has said that the turning point for him in order to become a stronger player came right after his loss to Juergen Melzer in the 2010 French Open. Is there a particular match or a particular moment, on court, that had the same effect on you?
If we talk about matches which made me stronger I would say the match I played against Fernando Verdasco two years ago at the Australian Open was probably the toughest loss that I had in my professional career, having three match points and chances, volleys and overheads and everything. But I think it was the determination I had before I started the year. I remember I lost the match, I was devastated, I stayed in my room all in the dark, and I called my brother and I said, no matter, I still feel this is going to be my year. Then I went to Johannesburg, flying like 35 hours to get there, playing really well in practice and losing first round to a wildcard, with five match points, 7-6 in the third. Again, I called my brother and I said, it doesn’t matter, I feel this is going to be my year. These two matches made me stronger and made me realise that the change doesn’t overcome night. It’s not enough that you wish it, you make a good pre-season and then suddenly doors start to open. It made me realise that I still needed to continue working and it will come. I’m going to quote Rocky Balboa now – in life and career it’s not about how hard you can get hit, it’s about how many times you can get hit and get up and find the fighting life again.

I’ve always admired your love and pride for your country, it’s really amazing to see the spirit and commitment you have when you represent Serbia not only during Davis Cup but every day. Do you think that kind of feeling comes naturally or can it be learnt? I, as you, am from a country with a complicated political scene (both past and present), which sometimes has made me regret where I’m from, I long for a day where I can feel about my country, the way you feel about Serbia. Could you give me an advice about that?
You either love your country or you don’t. Even though Serbia was in a tough position when I was growing up and as a country they didn’t have a lot to offer me. I really love my country but the thing that is even more important for me is this team spirit with my team-mates. I can promise you that I would not perform for Serbia as well as I have performed in the past couple of years if I didn’t have a great bunch of guys being my team-mates. If we didn’t get on, if we fought over time or didn’t like each other, I promise you that this would affect my fire and will to win on the court. Love and patriotism for the country is one thing but the other side is great team spirit which we have between us.

Mnogo znaci ova pobeda Tipsi, bukvalno povratak iz mrtvih nakon one dosadne povrede koja ga je rezultatski osakatila...

Tipsarević: Inspiriše me Majami

Energija grada i ljudi mi daje snagu. Ovo je verovatno najbolji turnir iz Masters serije - rekao je Janko, koji će se u osmini finala sastati sa Žilom Simonom.

Blown Away

Izvukla sam iz teksta samo sta je Janko rekao
“It was really tough to control the ball today,” Tipsarevic would tell me later. “Apart from the wind and sun there was tremendous humidity, and today Kevin was just smashing his first serve at me. It was more of a fight out there.”

“I think we were both of us just trying to stay in the point and control the game,” Tipsarevic said. “But with a lot of unforced errors from both sides.”

“I was feeling really lucky I was able to win that second set, especially with those conditions,” Tipsarevic told me. “Kevin is a Top 30 player. He won’t just make unforced errors if you’re just putting the ball in. My plan was to try to make him play and run as much as possible. Then with these conditions, if he takes the risk and hits the corners, you just say, ‘You were a better man than me today.’”

Reflecting on his recent past, Tipsarevic said: “I came back too early in European indoor swing. I was healthy but not really ready to play. I met two very tricky guys—[Michael] Llodra (in Montpellier) and Dmitry Tursunov (in Marseille). Suddenly I lost two first rounds, then in Dubai I have to play Nikolay Davydenko, who’s a great player, and then I am in a night session against Ernests Gulbis—who is coming from a 13-match winning streak and playing the tennis of his life.” Tipsarevic paused for a breath, sighed, and added: “It isn’t always easy.”

“It wasn’t pretty today. As Brad Gilbert would say, I was winning ugly. But I really, really needed this win today.”
