Top seed David Ferrer became the first player to win three straight Copa Claro titles, defeating second seed Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-3 in the final on Sunday in Buenos Aires.

World No. 5 Ferrer ended a seven-match losing streak in tour-level finals, winning his first title since last year's Copa Claro and his 21st overall. With his 11th clay-court crown, the 31 year old moved into a third-place tie with fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo on the title leaders list, behind Rafael Nadal (42) and Nicolas Almagro (12).

Ferrer led 3-0 to start the final, winning 12 of the first 18 points, before Fognini drew level at 3-all. Ferrer broke to take the opening set, and broke again for a 5-3 lead in the second. He improved to a 7-0 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Fognini, serving out the victory after one hour and 14 minutes.

Fognini was contesting the final for a fifth straight clay-court tournament and looking to win his fourth title. He triumphed last week at the Royal Guard Open Chile, the opening tournament of the Golden Swing.

Ferer: Stižu me godine

Španski teniser David Ferer, koji je u sredu napunio 32 godine, izjavio je za radio Marku da mu je fizička sprema u padu.

“Sada se više trošim kako bih igrao najbolje što mogu, primetio sam mali fizički pad, naročito ove godine. Potrebno mi je više vremena da reagujem, više vremena da se oporavim“, rekao je Ferer, prošlogodišnji finalista Rolan Garosa.

Uprkos tome, Ferer ne smanjuje ubitačan ritam turnira po kojem je poznat – do sada je odigrao sedam turnira, a sa još jednog se povukao.

Španac je sada šesti na svetu, a ove godine je slavio u Buenos Ajresu i igrao je četvrtfinale u Melburnu. Ferer kaže da još ne razmišlja o povlačenju, ali da bi voleo da se kalendar promeni kako bi mladi teniseri igrali duže.

“Tenis je sada mnogo zahtevniji fizički, a rukovodeća tela ne menjaju ništa“, zaključio je Ferer.
