After his match I asked him what goes through his mind when ballkids, fans, or opponents get hit by his serve.
“Depends who it hits,” he said smiling, continuing after the laughter in the unusually full room subsided. “When I hit the ballkids or someone in the crowd I say ‘sorry’. When it hits the opponent I say ‘sorry’, but I’m not as sorry.”

:nargile:

An interview with: MILOS RAONIC

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. What actually happened?
MILOS RAONIC: Yesterday at the end of practice, we finished doing an hour long practice, and I was just moving back and I rolled over my ankle and ended up spraining it.

Q. What did they tell you about it?
MILOS RAONIC: I don't know too much about it right now. I haven't really looked that much into it. Yesterday in the doubles it wasn't getting better, and then this morning it was a bit painful on pretty much every movement.
And playing the caliber of player I'd be up against, to play at 40% really didn't make much sense.

Q. Do you have any doctors that you can talk to about it?
MILOS RAONIC: I'm contacting the doctor back in Spain. I've spoken with him a bit. He doesn't think it's anything big. It probably just needs a couple days of rest, but active rest.
With treatment and so on, it should be okay within a week or so.

Q. Puts you in your next match where?
MILOS RAONIC: Monte Carlo.

Q. How frustrating is this for you? Just when things go well, suddenly there is another hiccup, whether it's minor or bigger injury or anything like that.
MILOS RAONIC: No, it's frustrating, but I think you take it from the big picture. Everything is going well. Obviously it would be more frustrating if things were going poorly.
When these things do happen, I have been pretty good at even though if I might miss or have some worries about something, I'm pretty good at coming back pretty quickly.
So it's nothing too bad. It's just something to deal with, put your head down, do the work, and let it take its time and come back ready to play when the next event comes around.

Q. Are you heading straight to Europe?
MILOS RAONIC: No. I'm going to go home a few days.

Q. Is this going to affect in any way your preparation for the clay court season?
MILOS RAONIC: No. Um, I had plans on anyways after I finish here going to Europe probably five to seven days after and starting my preparations.
So now I'll just have, I guess, a few more days because I will be there beginning of next week.

Q. Can you say your decision was partly influenced by the caliber of opposition you were going to be up against today?
MILOS RAONIC: Not really. I put myself in that position. Am I competitive? Am I going out there with an opportunity to win?
And also another factor is am I going out there with the risk of doing something worse about it, making more of an issue than it already is?
With all that calculated, it wasn't, by any means, the right choice to go out there today.

Raonic becomes ambassador for Kids’ Tennis

Toronto, March 29, 2012
– Tennis Canada announced Thursday the launch of a new campaign to promote the active, healthy living of children through the sport of tennis. Canada’s No. 1 singles player and world No. 26 Milos Raonic will be the ambassador for Kids’ Tennis, a scaled-down version of the sport that ensures earlier success for children by using modified racquets, balls and nets.
Also known as Progressive Tennis, Kids’ Tennis is used as a tool to attract young children to the game and allow them to improve their overall tennis skills faster so they can transition to the regular court with more success, fun and ease.
“Getting more kids playing the sport of tennis in Canada is extremely important to me,” said Raonic. “I hope that my recent success and results on the ATP World Tour will help to inspire more people to pick up a racquet. But they also need to know there are now easier ways for their children to learn the sport with this smaller equipment that is tailored to suit their abilities. That’s what I’m hoping these public service announcements will accomplish.”
The campaign will roll out in the form of two public service announcements with supporting print elements aimed at raising awareness and encouraging participation. Raonic made himself available for both the TV and print creative development which was shot over a full day at the Hollyburn Country Club in Vancouver early during the week of Davis Cup in February.
“A key priority for Tennis Canada is to increase participation, particularly in the under 12 demographic,” said Hatem McDadi, vice-president, tennis development, Tennis Canada. “Kids’ Tennis is our version of tee-ball or mini-soccer in that it is an introductory format that helps teach children the fundamentals of the sport, but on a smaller scale, so they have success which translates to fun. Milos is a great ambassador for Canadian tennis. Having him support Kids’ Tennis means so much as he is a role model for our future stars.”
Developed by Toronto ad agency Bensimon Byrne, the public service announcements take a humorous approach using role reversal where Raonic, the 6’5” ATP World Tour star, has difficultly playing Kids’ Tennis against a young girl. The spots will begin airing this coming weekend on Sportsnet ONE during the final of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami and will run continuously on several stations throughout the summer.

Milos Raonic likes Canada's chances against South Africa in a critical Davis Cup tennis playoff later this year.

The 21-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., is expected to lead the Canadian team into the best-of-five tie. Canada must win in order to remain in the World Group for 2013, while a loss would relegate the squad back to Americas Zone Group I.

"I think it's going to be a good one for us. Their players play similar to our players. They try to play aggressive," Raonic said on a conference call Wednesday. "I think we're going to have our opportunities and it's going to be about making the most of them.

"It's going to be tough but you're playing to be one of 16 teams in World Group next year so there's no way around it other than a tough matchup."

Canada is ranked 13th in the world while the South Africans are 23rd.

The Canadians started the year in the World Group for the first time since 2004 but lost their first-round tie 4-1 to France in February, forcing the playoff against South Africa.

The Sept. 14-16 tie will be held in South Africa with the specific venue and court surface to be announced later.

South Africa boasts one player in the ATP's top-100, Kevin Anderson.

Raonic says the No. 33 player in the world will pose a tough test.

"He's a good friend on the tour. He's a nice guy. As a player, he plays aggressive," he said. "He's won the tournament in South Africa before in Johannesburg in altitude so he knows how to play in those conditions. He's a very capable player."

Raonic, who was forced to withdraw from the Key Biscayne tournament last month because of an ankle injury and has also struggled with hip and knee problems, says he's going to better manage his time this season in hopes of staying healthy.

"I'm really focusing this year on the big tournaments especially," said Raonic, who hopes to represent Canada at the London Olympics. "I'm focusing my energy on playing fewer weeks and focusing on playing my best at the big events.

"I learned from last year when I sometimes stretched myself out too much and I've really narrowed my attention of specific events and making sure I'm the best player I can be during those weeks."

The Canadian team that lost to France in February also included Vancouver's Vasek Pospisil, Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., and Toronto's Daniel Nestor.
